REDUCED MOUTH OPENING
There are many reasons which may cause decrease in mouth opening. But one of the most prevalent reason for this is submucous fibrosis which is mainly seen in person eating supari or arecanut and tobacco. In this disease, bands are formed on the inner side of the cheek leading to decreased mouth opening. The other diseases where decreased mouth opening is seen are TM joint ankylosis, trismus, pathology or infection present in the oral and facial region.
This TM joint ankylosis is most commonly seen in children of age from 3 to adult. The most common reason of TM joint ankylosis is ear infection, infection or trauma of area surrounding joint which get unnoticed or untreated in children. This causes inability to open mouth as well as inadequate growth of the affected side of face leading to asymmetry in facial contour.
The other reason causing decrease in mouth opening is trismus most commonly due to infection with erupting wisdom tooth or akal daanth usually seen at the age of 16 to 25 years of age.Trismus and decrease mouth opening is also seen in cases of infection due to some other reason or presence of some pathology related to jaws.
We at cosmo laser dental have a proper protocol to treat these cases of decreased mouth opening.
Patient of submucous fibrosis are first evaluated for the amount of mouth opening and depending upon this laser treatment or required surgical intervention can be done.
Patients of TM joint ankylosis should be treated as early as possible to prevent the facial deformity and promote normal growth pattern in children however if facial deformity has occured then also in these patients ankylosis is released and later on we can treat this facial deformity by means of orthognathic surgery.
Patient with decreased mouth opening due to wisdom tooth can be relieved by means of medicine as well as surgery if required.
There are many reasons for decreased mouth opening which the patient can not corelate by seeing inside the mouth so it is also recommended to visit your oral surgeon for proper evaluation and treatment.
