ORAL CANCER

Oral cancer is any cancerous tissue growth or a non healing chronic ulcer located in the oral cavity. It may arise as a primary lesion originating in any of the oral tissues, by metastasis from a distant site of origin, or by extension from a neighbouring anatomic structure. There are several types of oral cancers, but around 90% are squamous cell carcinomas, originating in the tissues that line the mouth and lips. Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gingiva (gums), lips, or palate (roof of the mouth).

It may appear as small growth or as a non healing ulcer present over tongue, cheek lining, behind wisdom tooth or any other area of oral cavity. It may be painless initially but later on may become painful.

It has been found that most of the oral cancers are linked to modifiable behaviours such as tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption. Other factors include poor oral hygiene, irritation caused by ill-fitting dentures and other rough surfaces on the teeth, poor nutrition, and some chronic infections caused by bacteria or viruses. If oral cancer is diagnosed in its earliest stages, treatment is generally very effective.

Treatment of oral cancer involves first taking a small piece of tissue from the lesion known as biopsy. Depending upon the type of cancer and stage, resection of the tissue is done along with neck dissection as required. However in some cases radiotherapy and chemotherapy may also be required before or after surgery. Cancer surgery produces lot amount of facial deformity which can be reconstructed with number of flaps available from different parts of body.
